HOW TO RECOVER YOUR LEDGER WALLET USING ledger live download LIVE
WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START
Your 24-word recovery phrase and a Ledger device. The phrase must be written exactly as it was given to you, in the correct order. Without it, recovery is impossible. Also, download the latest version of Ledger Live from ledger.com.
The recovery phrase is the only backup of your private keys. If you lose it or it’s stolen, your crypto is gone forever. Always store it offline, never on a computer or cloud service.
HOW TO CONNECT YOUR LEDGER DEVICE
Plug your Ledger into your computer using the USB cable. Enter your PIN on the device to unlock it. If you’ve never set up a PIN, the device will prompt you to create one during recovery.
The PIN protects your device from unauthorized access. If you enter it wrong three times, the device resets, but your recovery phrase will still work.
OPEN LEDGER LIVE AND START RECOVERY
Launch Ledger Live. Click “Get started” if it’s your first time, or “Manager” if you’ve used it before. Select “Restore device” from the options.
This option is specifically for recovering an existing wallet. It will guide you through entering your recovery phrase to restore your accounts.
ENTER YOUR 24-WORD RECOVERY PHRASE
Ledger Live will ask you to enter your recovery phrase word by word. Use the buttons on your Ledger device to select each word from the list. Confirm each word before moving to the next.
The device shows only one word at a time to prevent malware from capturing your phrase. Never enter it on your computer or phone.
CONFIRM YOUR RECOVERY PHRASE
After entering all 24 words, the device will ask you to confirm a few random words from your phrase. This ensures you entered it correctly. If you make a mistake, start over.
This step catches typos or misremembered words. A single wrong word will restore the wrong wallet, so double-check every entry.
SET A NEW PIN
Once your phrase is confirmed, the device will prompt you to set a new PIN. Choose a PIN you’ll remember but isn’t easy to guess. Avoid simple sequences like 1234 or 0000.
This PIN is new and unrelated to any previous PIN you may have used. It secures your device for future use.
ADD YOUR ACCOUNTS IN LEDGER LIVE
After recovery, Ledger Live will ask you to add accounts. Click “Add account,” select the cryptocurrency you want to restore, and follow the prompts. Your balances will appear once the blockchain syncs.
This step imports your transaction history and balances. It may take a few minutes depending on the blockchain’s speed.
WHAT IF MY RECOVERY PHRASE DOESN’T WORK
First, check for typos or missing words. The phrase must match exactly, including the order. If you’re sure it’s correct but still not working, your device may be faulty. Contact Ledger Support with your proof of purchase.
A single wrong word or extra space will fail recovery. If you wrote it down by hand, compare it to the original backup carefully.
HOW TO VERIFY YOUR RECOVERY WAS SUCCESSFUL
Check your account balances in Ledger Live. They should match what you had before. Also, send a small test transaction to confirm you control the funds.
This step ensures your recovery phrase and device are working correctly. If balances are wrong, you may have entered the wrong phrase.
WHAT TO DO AFTER RECOVERY
Write down your recovery phrase again and store it securely. Update your Ledger Live and device firmware to the latest versions. Consider setting up a passphrase for extra security.
A passphrase adds an extra word to your recovery phrase, protecting against physical theft. Enable it in Ledger Live under “Security.”
CAN I RECOVER WITHOUT MY LEDGER DEVICE
No. The recovery phrase works only with a Ledger device or compatible hardware wallet. Software wallets or other brands won’t restore your Ledger accounts.
This is a security feature. Your private keys never leave the device, even during recovery.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR RECOVERY PHRASE GOING FORWARD
Store it offline in a fireproof, waterproof safe. Never share it, even with Ledger Support. Consider splitting it into parts and storing them in separate secure locations.
If someone gets your phrase, they can steal your crypto. Treat it like cash—keep it private and secure.
WHAT IF I LOST MY RECOVERY PHRASE
If you lose your recovery phrase and your device breaks or resets, your crypto is permanently lost. There’s no way to recover it without the phrase.
This is why Ledger stresses writing it down and storing it safely. No exceptions.
HOW TO TEST YOUR RECOVERY PHRASE BEFORE YOU NEED IT
Buy a second Ledger device and use it to recover your wallet with your phrase. This confirms the phrase works and gives you a backup device.
Testing your phrase now prevents panic later. It’s a small cost for peace of mind.
WHY DOES RECOVERY TAKE SO LONG
The device verifies each word of your phrase and rebuilds your wallet’s private keys. This process is slow to prevent brute-force attacks. Be patient—it’s for security.
Rushing could lead to mistakes. Let the device finish before disconnecting it.
CAN I USE LEDGER LIVE ON MULTIPLE DEVICES
Yes, but each device must be set up with the same recovery phrase. You can’t sync devices—each must be recovered separately.
This lets you access your wallet from multiple locations. Just ensure each device is secure.
HOW TO RECOVER IF YOUR LEDGER IS LOST OR STOLEN
Use your recovery phrase with a new Ledger device. Once set up, your accounts and balances will appear in Ledger Live. Immediately move your funds if you suspect theft.
This is why your recovery phrase is critical. Without it, a lost or stolen device means lost crypto.
WHAT IF I FORGOT MY PIN
If you forget your PIN, reset the device by entering the wrong PIN three times. Then recover using your 24-word phrase. You’ll set a new PIN during recovery.
This is a security measure. It wipes the device but keeps your crypto safe as long as you have the phrase.
HOW TO RECOVER SPECIFIC CRYPTOCURRENCIES
After restoring your wallet, add each cryptocurrency account in Ledger Live. Some tokens (like ERC-20) require enabling “Contract data” in the Ethereum app on your device.
Not all cryptocurrencies are added automatically. Check Ledger’s support site for specific instructions.
